The Most Beautiful Melodies of the Avseniks
In 2010, an audience of over 900 enjoyed this wonderful evening concert featuring a selection of the Avsenik brothers' most beautiful melodies performed by the Gregorji ensemble, a 35-piece symphony orchestra conducted by Matjaž Brežnik, and soloists. Zither player Miha Dovžan was a special guest. The musicians were given a rapturous reception by the audience. Deservedly so.
When: Friday, 19 August 2011 at 8.00pm
Where: festival venue, Sora pri Medvodah
The concert programme was hosted by TV presenter Bernarda Žarn. The concert was followed by a Carniolan sausage tasting for all those present, a fitting conclusion to a unique cultural event.

The idea of the organisers was to present what amounts to a modern musical phenomenon in Slovenia and which, like the Carniolan sausage, is also widely recognised around the world. This genre of cultural heritage, known as popular folk music, traces its origin to the formation of the Avsenik Brothers Ensemble in 1953. Today the ensemble and the Avseniks' melodies have many imitators both in Slovenia and around the world and are even mentioned in encyclopaedias as a special musical phenomenon and unique form of musical creativity. The tradition of the original ensemble formed by the Avsenik brothers is today continued by the Gregorji, and arrangements of the Avseniks' melodies are also performed by symphony orchestras.
